Introduction
The Exotic is a breed of cat developed as a short-haired version of the Persian, in our terminology: it is a sister breed of the Persian. Both breeds share the same breed standard, except for the coat. Thus, the Exotic is similar to the Persian in many ways, including conformation and temperament.
History
In the late 1950s, the Persian was used as an outcross by American Shorthair breeders to improve their body type. Breeders who saw the potential of these crosses proposed and eventually achieved recognition of them as a new breed: the Exotic. The breed is recognised by FIFe since 1983.
Appearance
The Exotic meets the same appearance as the Persian, except for the coat. The Exotic has a round face, a short, cobby body, short thick legs with round paws and a broad chest, the tail is short. The coat is short and dense, the texture fine and silky.
Temperament
Exotics have a gentle and calm personality reminiscent of the Persian, but are generally livelier than their longhaired ancestors. Curious and playful, they are friendly to other cats and dogs, but they do not like being left alone and need the presence of their owner. They tend to show more affection and loyalty than most breeds and make excellent lap cats.
