Introduction
The Selkirk Rex is a fairly new cat breed. The breed is known for its curly fur, which can be both short-haired and long-haired.
History
The Selkirk originated in Montana, USA in the late 1980s. It originates from a natural mutation found in a feral kitten (Miss DePesto) which was born completely curly. To build a good genetic diversity, some other breeds have been used during the years, e.g. Persian, Exotic and British Shorthair. The breed was recognized by FIFe in 2017.
Appearance
Selkirk Rex is relatively large and solidly built cat. They have a round-shaped head, large eyes, round and horizontal when viewed from the front. They have soft and thick, plush fabric-like fur, which is dense and curly. All three hair layers are curled and whiskers as well. The curls are gentle, of varying degrees and are best seen in the neck, tail or belly area. Selkirks can be either homozygous (carry two genes, the offspring always have curly hair) or heterozygous (carry one gene). Homozygotes often completely shed their fur at a certain age as a kitten and may shed it as an adult as well. Fur develops slowly and is fully developed when the cat around 2 years old.
Temperament
By nature, the Selkirk Rex is calm, but still playful. Selkirks are quite social and enjoy being around people and get along well with both other cats and dogs.
