Statement from the FIFe Board regarding social media

We are reaching out to address the recent discussions on social media following the Dutch government’s announcement of a ban on hairless cats, as well as similar bans announced or already in place in other countries. We understand that this situation has generated significant emotions among FIFe breeders, exhibitors, and judges.

While the Board acknowledges these valid concerns, we urge all involved to revisit and adhere to our Code of Ethics for breeders and exhibitors resp. for judges which can be found in our rules before engaging in online discussions. It is important to emphasize that fiery or aggressive debates can create a misleading impression of FIFe to the outside world. Such behaviour risks damaging the reputation of our entire community, particularly those diligently working to address the pressing challenges we currently face. We respect and champion everyone’s freedom of speech; however, we must underline that constructive dialogue is crucial. Consequently, we encourage everyone to refrain from creating a disrespectful environment and to avoid personal attacks or unfounded accusations regarding FIFe’s adherence to its own rules.

In this context, it is crucial to understand that FIFe cannot interfere with national legislation and must respect it, especially when it is more stringent than our own rules. This principle is already reflected in our Show Rules, which mandate that exhibitors ensure compliance with the veterinary regulations of the country where a show is held. We acknowledge that such national regulations may differ from FIFe’s rules.

We understand that some may call for Winner Shows to be prohibited in countries where not all FIFe-recognised breeds are welcome. If this sentiment is shared among exhibitors and breeders, the upcoming FIFe General Assembly is the appropriate forum for dedicated proposals on this subject for our Members’ consideration.

FIFe continues its work with this matter and assures you that we are doing as much as possible at various levels. However, it is primarily the responsibility of our national Members to engage with their local authorities on these issues.

This is not the time for assigning blame, but rather for helping one another. The FIFe Board hopes we can foster a respectful and constructive environment as we navigate these challenges together.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
